Butterflies, Butterflies and more Butterflies.

During Green week our focus was about caring for  butterflies around the school environment.
We have linked our learning with maths and symmetry. Check out our symmetrical butterflies.

Measurement

Room 4 have been using themselves to measure large areas around the school. They were given a helping hand by the children in Room 1 because we did not have enough children to complete the measurement. The math turned out to be 16 children plus 18 children = 34 children. They also learned some great maths words,  estimate, calculate and findings.

After that they went on to measure with rulers, using 30 centimeter rulers.

OWL BABIES

We shared a big book this week called Owl Babies written by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Patrick Benson.  The main characters in the story are Sarah, Percy and Bill,  we drew pictures and wrote a story about them. Here are some of our stories for you to read. Check out our beautiful Owl mural as well.

Diwali Diva's

To celebrate Diwali we made Diva's out of clay. We left them to dry overnight and then painted them in metallic paint. The last stage was to sprinkle glitter on the wet pant. They were so pretty we can't wait to put in a real candle.

Yummy Gummy Worms

As part of this terms Celebrations Unit, Room 4 recognised Halloween and had a great time making gummy worms from jello and cream. They needed to measure the ingredients and follow the mixing instructions very carefully. They used You Tube so they could re-wind the clip  to make sure they were getting things, just right.

Check out the link to see exactly what they did.

The final touch was a hefty sprinkle of crushed Oreo's to replicate soil. The fun was at the end during the tasting,

but not all children were too keen.

Pouring the mixture into the worm molds (the straws).

Ready for the fridge and the over night chill.

Into the fridge  they go.

The next day squeezing out the worms from the molds.

Now to add the crushed Oreo's

A plate full of worms!!

Now for the tasting.

Learning through play during lunch time

Room 4 children have being making good use of the bits and bobs in the shed. Children have had the opportunity to make imaginative designs to play in, using things that may usually end up in the landfill. They also have been practising their basketball skills using the new hoops.  A big thank you to all the adults who supplied the equipment for the children to enjoy during play time.

Celebrating Manaakitanga

Well done to Zach this week for working very hard to be caring, respectful and responsible. Room 4 would like to celebrate Manaakitanga with you Zach.
